New Year Resolution...kind of

We spent the New Year watching "Space Buddies" and eating rice crispy treats. I made black-eyed peas and corn bread for dinner. I loved it, Sarah kind of liked it and Cody gagged on it. The gym was closed so we went shopping and out to lunch instead of working out. Cody has been bugging me to go to Red Lobster. Really? Why? Anyway, I took him yesterday since Chris refuses to go and he's in a flooded field in West Arkansas chasing ducks around for 4 days. We won't be going back to Red Lobster anytime soon. Mine was yuck and salty, but the kids loved their fried stuff.

Last night I was trying to think of something to do with myself that is just for me. I tried to think of what I really wanted to accomplish this year. I guess that falls under the resolution category. Several things ran through my head...learn to play the guitar so I can start a rock band of hot mama's...starting a women's fitness class at one of the parks...write a self help book...paint my living room and dining room...take a cake decorating class...oh and run a 5K race. My decision is to run a 5k. The reason I'm writing about it is simple - accountability. Now that I've told someone (if anyone reads this) I will do it. It's a basic goal setting technique. Making resolutions are great, but you have to set up a plan to achieve them. That plan has to be structured and attainable. The website will help me stay on track and my goal is something that is challenging but not unattainable.

I will pick a race for the Spring depending on the length of time I need to train. A friend told me of a website that details a plan from the couch to a 5k in 9 weeks(http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml). I hope to run a race for a cause like the Cure or children. I'm excited because I've never been a great runner and find the task daunting. The most I've ever ran at one time is 2 miles. My goal is to finish the race under 30 minutes. That should be attainable at a 10 minute mile pace. Anyone want to join me in this challenge?

I'll tackle the other goals after I've done the race. I'm always surprised and motivated when I push myself out of "the box" or my comfort zone. Running makes me uncomfortable for sure and so does a race. I'm afraid I'll push myself too hard or do something crazy like get a tennis shoe tattoo. I forgot to put "get a tattoo" on my wish list for the year.

Happy New Year!

good for you!! was i the one who told you about that, or were you aware that chris and i both successfully accomplished the couch to 5k? WONDERFUL way to 'up' yourself to 5k. i loved it! (and i need to start it back up, as well.)

this is a great goal, amber!!! good luck!!!!!

about those blackeye peas? i had mine on the stove simmering, and sophie bursts into the kitchen with, "momma, there's a smell in the house that's making me gag"

she then walked around for an hour or so with her shirt over the lower part of her face trying not to. *shakes head* those were GOOOOOOOOOOOD peas, too!

Yep, you are the friend that told me about it!

I hope you get back to it. Are you still a member at the Y?

Amber, I'm in!!!! I joined a gym last month and have been jogging...but I think I'd like to try this approach. When Cole is in school three days a week I go to the gym right after I drop him off. I'd love to do a charity run.
